Many people work an office job in which they spend a large portion of their day sitting at a computer. While you’re not partaking in physical labor, you’re still putting a lot of strain and stress on your body.

Spending too much time in front of a computer can take a toll on the discs in your back. This can result in pain, discomfort and stiffness, among a variety of other ailments.

If you’re concerned that your job is resulting in poor back health, here are some tips you should follow:

  • Focus on your posture: When sitting at a computer, make sure your spine is properly aligned at all times. Sit straight up and down, don’t lean over and make sure your feet are planted firmly on the ground.
  • Move around often: When possible, get out of your seat every 20 to 30 minutes. This gives you time to stretch your back, take pressure off your discs and give your eyes a break.
  • Choose the right chair: If you’re sitting in an old chair with little to no support, it’s time for a change. Search for one that provides lumbar and thigh support, along with the ability to adjust the height.

As the days go by, you may come to find that you require medical assistance for your back injury. If your doctor finds something wrong, such as a slipped or herniated disc, follow the treatment strategy they lay out for you.

If you can’t immediately return to work after your injury, learn more about filing a claim for workers’ compensation benefits.
