As a construction or industrial worker, there’s a good chance you use a saw to complete a variety of tasks. For example, a circular saw is one of the most commonly used tools in the construction industry.

While there’s no denying the many benefits of using a circular saw, including precise cuts and increased efficiency, safety should always be at the top of your mind.

Here are five tips that can keep you safe when using a circular saw:

  • Always wear protection: This includes protection for your eyes, ears and nose.
  • Don’t wear anything loose: For example, gloves, jewelry and loose clothing could get caught in the saw, causing it to do something you were not expecting
  • Read the manufacturer’s instructions: If you’re unfamiliar with how to use a particular circular saw, read the instructions before you do anything. You may be surprised at the information you find.
  • Inspect the saw before using: You’re looking for any defects or damage that could impact safety. An example is a bent blade or frayed cord.
  • Always use the guard: Many people remove the guard to make certain cuts easier. Avoid doing this, as it’s a big safety hazard.

Even if you follow these circular saw safety tips, you could still injure yourself. The saw could malfunction when you least expect it, or someone could bump you when making a cut.

If you suffer an on the job injury, stop what you’re doing to assess the situation. Ask a co-worker to call for help while you get started with first-aid (if possible).

After receiving medical treatment, learn more about your workers’ compensation rights.
