If you begin to experience back pain as the result of your employment, it’s important to pinpoint what’s gone wrong and how to resolve the pain and discomfort as quickly as possible.

A bulging disk, for example, can knock you off your feet for an extended period of time. Worse yet, if you don’t receive the proper treatment, it’s an issue that can come back time after time.

Is surgery necessary?

While not typically the case, there are times when a bulging disk requires surgery. This may be necessary if you’re suffering from:

  • Weakness or numbness
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Difficulty walking or standing

If surgery isn’t necessary, a variety of alternative medicine treatments can be used. Some of the most common options include:

  • Chiropractic care
  • Massage
  • Yoga
  • Acupuncture

Also, getting enough rest immediately following the injury is of utmost importance. If you’re in extreme pain, your doctor can prescribe medication to help you rest more easily. From over-the-counter pain medications to muscle relaxers, there are many types of medication that can provide immediate relief.

Depending on your profession, a bulging disk may keep you away from work for an extended period of time.

If you’re unable to work as the result of an on-the-job neck or back injury, you should provide your employer with more information and then file a claim for workers’ compensation benefits.

Receiving benefits as you recover can help lessen the financial burden. Once you’re up to it, you can then return to work and hopefully take on your previous responsibilities.
