Do you have a concussion?

A head injury, such as a concussion, is extremely serious. Not only can this alter your life immediately following the accident, but it can have a longstanding impact as well.

If you have any reason to believe you're dealing with a concussion, the best thing you can do is receive immediate medical treatment. This will confirm your situation, thus giving you the best possible chance to make a full recovery.

Here are some of the most common signs and symptoms of a concussion:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Feeling of pressure build up in the head
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Dizziness
  • Seeing stars
  • Amnesia about the accident
  • Confusion
  • Delayed response to simple questions
  • Ringing in the ears

While many concussion symptoms set in right away, others may not appear for several hours or days after the accident. These can include:

  • Smell and taste disorders
  • Irritability, personality changes and mood swings
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Sensitivity to noise and light

With so many serious signs and symptoms of a concussion, it's imperative to receive medical treatment without delay. If you assume you can treat this injury on your own, you're putting yourself in position for more complications in the future.

A concussion can be a challenge to overcome, so don't assume that it will only take a day or two to get back on your feet. You don't want to rush back to work, all with the idea that this will help you get back to normal.

Instead, if you're unable to work as the result of your injury, look into the process of filing a claim for workers' compensation benefits.
